I'd better get this out of the way: I do not believe in Net Neutrality. I don't think it's a good thing and I don't believe it represents "freedom" or "equality" or any of the other high concept phrases that its supporters are throwing about. And I'm afraid that when many people (most people?) are treated to simple versions of the "pro NN" argument and they nod their head in agreement - it goes something like this:

"What makes the Internet great is that the little guys have the same access as the big guys - Net Neutrality will make certain that greatness remains"

"If we allow Netflix and Amazon and Google to have 'preferred' bandwidth privileges, then the little guys will be squeezed out. Smaller sites will have poor performance and will eventually go dark. How is that fair?"

I think the best way to make certain that everyone gets what they want is to allow companies and users to pay for it. If I want to watch Netflix 4K videos, I'd better be willing to pay extra so that the bandwidth is there for me. If Netflix wants to stream 4K video, they should have a way of paying for faster lanes on the highway.

And speaking of highways, that's not a bad metaphor. Gasoline taxes and toll booths mean that the primary users of those access facilities pay the price for better travel. The ISP marketplace will offer the same thing. Without any promise of Net Neutrality, you'll be able to sign-up for basic Internet that allows access to everything. Some sites will perform better than others. I'm certain that you will also find ISPs that offer great streaming video (for instance) for a higher price. If NN becomes laws, it will NOT mean that everyone will get speedy access to all sites! Equality in Internet access will have the same attributes as equality in the payroll of a Socialist shoe factory: average for everyone.

We have not yet achieved equality in our public schools nationwide, but can you image what would happen if we outlawed private schooling? If we thought it was outrageous that people would want to pay more for what they thought would be better service?

Do not be fooled by the promises of Net Neutrality. If we let the market follow its own path - things will get faster for everyone, the little guys AND the big guys.
